We are mindful of Psalm 90:17: “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us and confirm for us the work of our hands; yes, confirm the work of our hands,” as we find many ways to offer our time and talent in service together. The Health Cabinet - We seek to improve the spiritual, mental and physical health of our parish through health ministries and to promote holistic health and healing within the congregation. The program is an integrator of faith and health, touching all those served with God's healing grace. Members who work in the health care industry make up the cabinet and organize health-related events for the congregation and community throughout the year. The group generally meets about four times each year. On Father’s Day in 2009 we held our first Sunday morning Red Cross Blood Drive, and other wellness event plans are always underway. Contact Carol Bohling if you are interested in serving with this ministry group. Cover Girls Quilters – These quilters meet the third Wednesday of each month from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm to work together on quilts. A pot luck lunch is always part of the fun for the day. Quilts are given to support the ministry of Lutheran World Relief in disaster and development assistance around the world and are provided to local agencies as well. Quilt pieces are available at the Ministry Center for anyone who would like to work on assembly in the comfort of your own home. Contact Marilyn Freeman for more information. Prayer Shawl Ministry – Prayer Shawls are knit or crocheted in the spirit of prayer for the person who might receive and use this gift. Patterns and yarn to make shawls and baby caps are available at the Ministry Center. While much of this ministry can be accomplished outside of the church building, this group meets occasionally to share. They celebrate and dedicate what has been made and given to the glory of God, and plan for the dispersal of the completed projects. Whether you’ve worked with yarn your whole life or are just beginning, the group is happy to teach or to learn as they prepare these gifts to promote healing and caregiving on behalf of the congregation. They gather occasionally on the first Tuesday of the month: watch the calendar for specifics or contact Marilyn Freeman.
The Altar Guild exists to support the sacramental ministry of First Lutheran Church. The tasks are varied: setting up for baptisms and communions, keeping the candles ready to burn as needed for worship, keeping the cloths that adorn the altar clean and in good condition, overseeing the care of the choir robes and the funeral pall, and preparing the altar flowers for distribution after worship on behalf of the congregation for those recently hospitalized to enjoy. All of these are tasks that men and women are welcome to share in. There are quarterly meetings to keep the planning moving forward, and periodically opportunities to help are listed in the Green Sheets. Contact Judi McKenzie if you would like to be involved.
Funeral Teams – When a family is bereaved, the congregation gathers around to support them in various ways. Caring for the fellowship following a funeral is one of the special ministries that requires some flexibility and a little bit of time, but will be appreciated by those who are weary from the attending to the death of a loved one. The First Lutheran Women’s organization convenes volunteers who are responsible for helping bring food, providing set up, serving and cleaning upon these occasions. Look for opportunities to join a team via the Green Sheets, or contact the President of the FLCW if you would like to be added to a team. Pencil Sharpeners – Everyone likes to find the pencil in the pew ready to use. Someone from this group of volunteers checks the pew pencils every week replacing and sharpening the ones that need attention. The volunteers for this ministry include singles, couples and families. Contact Tammi Wolff to be added to the rotation. New Member Hosts – This group organizes the meal held on the Sunday of each new member reception. New members of First Lutheran are matched with current members as they join the church. These host families attend the New Member Dinner and help the new members feel welcome to our church. Contact Tami Hall if you are willing to help with this ministry. Star Cross Assembly and Maintenance – First Lutheran members have become known in the community for these lighted crosses displayed during the Advent, Epiphany and Easter seasons. Contact Bob Brodd, Clarence Schakat, or Gene Tharp if you’re willing to lend a hand. 2nd Monday Men and Women – Gather at 9:00 am for coffee and then to join in attending to duties that keep our Lord’s house and grounds in tip-top shape. From replacing stained ceiling tiles or burnt out light bulbs to landscaping; organizing or restocking the kitchen items to cleaning out the refrigerators or laundering linens: there’s always a task awaiting another helping hand and willing spirit. Contact Ron Young for information about upcoming priorities, or simply show up on a 2nd Monday! The Library Committee - This committee serves the fellowship at First Lutheran in an on-going effort to update and make the library more user friendly. Meets once a month to re-shelf books that have been returned. Card files are maintained and new items catalogued and shelved from time to time. Contact Ione Popken for more information or to offer your help. |
