Baptism – belonging. We are adopted into God’s family through baptism, a means of God’s grace in the transformation of our lives and world. This is the sign which gives us the identity of “Christian,” and which shapes us continually for a life of service and meaning. We make these promises at baptism: To live among God’s faithful people, To hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper, To proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, To serve all people, following the example of Jesus Christ, And to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.
Our pastors are happy to assist both adults and children in preparing for baptism.
Communion – sustaining. Those who have been baptized, wherever that was and whenever that was, have been made disciples of Jesus. The meal that Jesus instituted on the night in which he was betrayed, continues to shape our life of faith and practice of discipleship. At First Lutheran Church, all who have been baptized are welcome to receive the bread and wine offered in this meal. Open your heart and come to the table, believing that the presence of Jesus in this meal brings the benefits of grace and forgiveness, hope and purpose for you.
Prayer. Study. Service. Giving. And other practices that shape our life together…. Lutherans understand baptism and communion to be sacraments in which we are assured God is always and continually present to create and renew life. We also experience God’s presence and grace for us through other faith practices and throughout the passages of our lives. As a congregation, we shape opportunities to study together, to intercede for those in special need, to serve in our community and around the world, to practice generosity. We attend to one another in times of joy, such as the blessing of a marriage, and in times of sorrow, such as the death of a loved one. Though Sunday morning is our primary weekly opportunity to gather, we seek to foster commitment to growing in faith as a disciple of Jesus amongst all members of the body of Christ. First Lutheran Church exists to raise up disciples in the greater Fremont area who transforms lives through Christ.
