Good Friday - March 21

Tenebrae (Latin for “darkness”) was the name given to the medieval predawn morning prayer celebrated by monks during the last three days in Holy Week. As the light began to dawn, the candles used for reading were gradually extinguished, so that at the end of the service,

the rising sun provided the necessary light for reading and singing.

In our worship together, the extinguishing of   candles has been placed within the reading of the Passion. After each reading, one of seven candles is put out. As the

service ends, only the Christ candle remains. As the

church gathers to remember the death of Jesus, we focus not only upon the agony of the cross but especially upon God’s victory through the crucified.
